Vintage fabric glamourpuss!

Every time I look at this 1970s novelty synthetic I think...glamourpuss! Why glamourpuss? I have no idea - I just think the lady in that long dress with the stars and moon looks so...so...glamourpuss-ish!

Lots of synthetics popped onto the site today...and lots of 80s kitschness, too!

Off you toddle, Ness...

Photobucket

I have done my back. Yes, I have. Bad back. Norty back. So I have been lying on my side a lot inbetween wrapping orders and putting new stock up. Apparently a sore back can also mean lack of support. Oh dear...not something else to think about!

Off to rest with a good book, methinks. I listen to my body more as I get older. Tonight it is saying "I'm tired - need a rest, thanks, Ness. Off you toddle..."

'Night 'night, all...

Cruising into shark infested waters...

Photobucket

There is something so olde worlde glamour about cruises, don't you think? Or travelling by ship, a la An Affair to Remember. I have to admit the thought of journeying off for a week or so and disembarking onto the occasional island (and having the kids entertained) seems quite an intoxicating option. This is a kitsch 1980s first class/cruising fabric that will soon be going up onto the website - maybe an option if you can't see yourself cruising off into the sunset?

PS. Before I go on a cruise I'll have to conquer my shark phobia.
PPS. Yes, I know there is more likelihood of having a car accident than a ship going down.
PPPS. But if the ship goes down the sharks with swirl for lunch.
PPPPS. Forget it. I am not cruising anywhere.

It's school holidays here, so that calls for kiddie play for both kiddies and adults alike. So we took off to Scienceworks yesterday to give the kids a day of fun, play and laughter. I love the retro area of Scienceworks - of course I love looking at the old things! It's amazing how much of it we have in our own household - even our sauce bottle is there!

Back at work today :)

Even behind trying times there is still beauty...

There is much in life that offers testing times. Like when the people you love and admire get ill, such as Derryn Hinch and Jim Stynes who are both fighting cancer, and my Mum who is recovering (very well!) from lens replacement cataract surgery. Now one of our lovely cats in slowing down, spending her days sleeping on our bed and one of our son's fish has got some mysterious white stuff on the tail and fins. The cat is sleeping right now and the fish has been popped into a plastic bag and is now off to the aquarium for some much needed medicine. The boys are fighting who gets to hold the bag. Oh dear.

And then I look at the beauty of these new vintage fabric arrivals and I remember how beautiful life can be...even behind trying times.

I wish I had vintage fabric dreams...

There must be a part of my subconsciousness that is in the clouds of history. For about three weeks I have been dreaming about people from my past and family - night after night after night. Most of the dreams feature the same people - people I have cared about through my life who I may not be in contact with anymore - and some who I am. Some of the dreams are horrid - most haven't been leaving me with a wonderful feeling, put it that way. I am trying to see the messages in the dreams - do you do that? I think we can get messages in our dreams - from our subconscious, especially. I think my dreams are trying to tell me to let go of the past and move on - there is much to be lived without the people I have loved in my past...

I have popped up some new arrivals today, including the fabric pictured above. Most of the day will be spent wrapping fabrics, but if I can find some time, I want to get a further 10 fabrics up on the website...

It is 10am and I am still trying to shake off last nights dream. I don't like that. I wish I could dream I was in a vintage fabric museum...wouldn't that be the bomb?

Catching your vintage fabric tail when you can...

Since beginning working at Retro Age Vintage Fabrics full-time I have tried to keep my working hours as strict as possible - arriving at 8.30am, working from 9am and then it finishes up in the mid-afternoon. The trouble is, I seem to be following my tail - I have so many fabrics here that I need to get up onto the site that I feel perpetually 'not up to speed'. That brings me to today - yes, Saturday. I decided to pop in and quickly put four fabrics up on the site here. I feel better for it - a quick work hit and now it's back to the family and enjoying my day...goody! I must be feeling all Summery - as the fabrics all have a hint of warm weather and a lighter feel...especially that kitsch 80s number!

Hope you're having a fab weekend!

I am thoroughly enjoying my day - listening to 3AW, enjoying the mild weather (for once it's not cold!) and laughter around me. It's a busy day as I want to get more fabric up onto the website (20 pieces are photographed and ready) - for now, I've popped some fabric on sale and on clearance...hurrah! There's cottons and linens and blends from the 40s to the 80s here. Time for a lunch break, methinks!

Life is sweeter, today...

I am back at work - phew! - what a couple of days that was! My wonderful Mum had a cataract removed yesterday morning and today her sight out of her right eye is better than 20-20 vision! She can't stop oohing and ahhhing at everything - she is like a kid in a lollyshop, reading every sign she sees. She has worn glasses since the age of three (multi-lens etc), so to find out today she will only need reading glasses every now and then was a magnificent surprise for her. Life for my Mum was so much sweeter today - it was a joy to see!

I am back at work full-time tomorrow - how I've missed thee, sweet vintage fabrics!

Maggie Beer, where has your ice-cream been all of this time?

The weekend was a lazy one for us...exactly the way we like it. We enjoyed the company of family and friends, were introduced to the amazing Maggie Beer fig ice-cream and I also spent a great deal of time in the kitchen preparing yummy casseroles, baking sweet treats like apple turnovers and chocolate chip cup cakes and preparing our menu for the week. Yes, that's right. Menu. I am now the type of person who plans their meals instead of the spontaneous wreck-coming-your-way-without-a-recipe cook. Yep, no more food wreck for me...

We have spent all day packaging fabrics, however the time is almost nigh when I'll be putting 10 new arrivals up onto the site. Yes, they are the lovelies above! I have to work back tonight as I'll be MIA for a great deal of tomorrow as I have a loved one who is having a cataract removed...so some fabrics may not go up until later tonight!***** Phew!

***** Ahem. It's now past 10pm and I haven't the energy to put these pieces up tonight. Tomorrow it must be! Sorry...

1962 VIP coloured yarns for Autumn/Fall

Photobucket

Photobucket

These are the colours of the V.I.P coloured yarns for Fall/Autumn, 1962, taken from the American Fabrics magazine I have from the same period. "...The V.I.P coloured yards were in cotton, wool, wosted, man-made fibers and blends of all types. They highlighted business-stimulating colours and colour combinations for fashion-minded designers in the men's, women's and children's fields."

I love some of the names - Monaco Brown, Cannes Pink, Riviera Green...the names ooze an image, don't they? I don't know if you get that so much these days...

New arrivals - Friday

I've popped some more fabrics on the website today - this is just some of them - off to continue packing orders and ato have a lunch break, I think!

There is nothing like a bit of this for half an hour...

Sigh...I love Spring and soft sun, bright blue skies and swaying magnolia trees...

1962 vintage fabrics can be so now...

These are some wonderful advertisements from the 1962 Spring edition of American Fabrics. My favourite is, of course, the sweet owls - but the fierceness of the Galey and Lord fabric and illustration is greatly impressive...and the beauty of the Everfast fabric can'tbe denied. But the Galey and Lord is so now, I think.

I have been ironing away all morning - I've popped up a further four fabrics into the new arrivals section of the website. They are some lovely 1940s, 50s and 60s cottons that I've popped on clearance as they are not perfect - unfortunately this is what happens when fabric isn't stored properly! So they are cheap and perfect for your smaller craft projects. The four of them are featured below.
